Behavior and Design Books

Behavior Change Books and Service Design Books

Are you curious about books I use that help me with frameworks and models in behavior change?

Here are a few good ones I have close at hand.

πŸ“— Engaged by Amy Bucher
This is a great actionable, go-to book, talks about using Self Determination theory as well as the COM-B model. If you go to Amy's website you can find some great resources

Amy works at Lirio where they are combining behavioral science and AI

πŸ“• Designing for Behavior Change by Stephen Wendel
He uses his DECIDE framework:

>Define the problem.
>Explore the context.
>Craft the intervention.
>Implement within the product.
>Determine its impact.
>Evaluate next steps

Stephen works for Busara a nonprofit organization that uses social and behavioral science to solve problems in development and poverty. (fun fact, he lives in Costa Rica - my other nationality πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡· )

πŸ“– The Behavior Change Wheel by Susan Michie and Robert West
shows the COM-B model, Behavior Change Wheel - which is a go-to model for my work. Their work at UCL lets us all have open frameworks and models to help people make better choices.

πŸ“™ Design for How People Think by John Whalen, PhD
looks at a model of 6 minds, more geared towards product and service design.

>Language
>Wafinding
>Vision/Attention
>Memory
>Emotion
>Decision Making

John works at Brilliant Experience

I'm a big believer in mixed models, so I included 2 bonus books that are not BeSci related:

πŸ“š The Design Thinking Playbook by Michael Lewrick, Ph.D, MBA
He has written many design thinking books and is currently running his own agency Lewrick & Company where they are applying design thinking, lean startup, and business ecosystem design.

πŸ“” This is Service Design Doing by Marc Stickdorn Adam StJohn Lawrence and friends.

Mark is leading Smaply a company helping companies manage customer experience and Adam is a practitioner and also an adjunct professor at IE Business School (I also attended IE, fun times in Madrid)

πŸ’‘ These books are great ways to get introduced and to start experimenting and building better experiences using a behavioral lens.

😍 I love these books because they give you frameworks and actionable plays you can use.
